Woman robs fruit-seller of Rs60,000 in Karachi

KARACHI: A motorcycle-borne armed couple allegedly robbed a fruit seller of cash and mobile phones on Saturday, ARY News reported.

In his complaint registered at Gulberg police station, the fruit seller alleged that a man and a woman had approached him in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area in the guise of buying watermelons.

According to him, the couple first arrived at his kiosk and bought watermelons worth Rs 680. They then handed him a Rs5,000 bill and asked for change, on which the fruit seller took the bill and returned the remaining amount.

However, the fruit seller, said that the armed couple declined to buy the fruit citing the hiked price of the watermelons and took their money back.

As soon as the other customers left, the couple returned, took out guns and snatched Rs60,000 along with two mobile phones from him, the street vendor alleged.

Reports said that at least 45 Karachi citizens have been killed so far in 2024 over resisting robberies with February recording the highest number of 20 killings.

Month-wise data showed that February recorded the most killings with 20 citizens losing their lives to the robbers.

In January, as many as 13 people were killed by robbers while around 12 city dwellers were murdered by the dacoits so far during the current month.

Amid the rising crime rate in the city, the Sindh government earlier today appointed Imran Yaqoob Minhas as the new Karachi police chief.

As per the notification, Imran Yaqoob has replaced Khadim Hussain Rind who was serving as the police chief. Rind has been asked to report to the Establishment Division.

The Karachi police on March 26 decided to mobilise the Shaheen Force in the metropolitan after dozens of citizens were killed while resisting robberies.

According to details, the District West police dispatched a 150-member team for a refresher course while several teams of the Shaheen Force have been constituted to fight street crimes.
